Back in the saddle

So tonight I'm running the first session of the first campaign I've run in about a year. What's more is that it's DnD - my first time running it (or even playing it) officially (rather than at cons) for over a decade.

A decade.

So, needless to say, I'm somewhat nervous. I had a bit of a brainwave in the shower today as to how to get the party together, because my first idea was shit, but even so I'm anxious. I mean, it's a group of really good players, and I don't want to disappoint them.

But Jye refering to me as "Dungeon Mistress" early in the morning was rather nice. :)

I've snuck my rule books in to work with me so that I can brush up on the rules. Did I say brush up? I meant learn for the first time. I need to jot down some NPC stats as well, just so I know what I'm doing. And a short-hand cheat sheet so that I can try to get things to run smoothly.

Must think of a decent soundtrack for tonight as well.

Can't help but wonder what I've gotten myself into...

Does that mean you'll be wearing leather to the game? ;)

no saddles ... it hurts
I remember an old Avenger's episode (before even my time, but I have DVD technology) ... where Diana Riggs is in full head to toe tight leather outfit, tied to a saddle ...

Thinking of miss_rynn in that way in rather disturbing ...

Re: no saddles ... it hurts
because its miss_rynn ... she's sort of a sister type figure for me ... her being sexy sort of disturbs this simple concept ...

Tips
You might want to chop up a few A5 bits of paper and use them to keep track of the turn sequence. Have one card for each combatant or have say three or so bad guys lumped together and use it to record stuff like current hit points, attacks (and their total bonuses), damage, AC and any current spell effects. Then just stack them each turn and combat will be a lot easier.

Re: Tips
Other tips that I've heard is that you really really want to use figurines, or at least tokens on a bit of paper. It simplifies range, movement, attack-of-opportunity, cover and line-of-sight type questions a great deal. Without that, you get a lot more confusion about who and what is exactly where, and likely waste a lot of time in back-and-forth description and argument.

figurines rock ... shows instantly all the targets of opportunity and flanking stuff ...

- make you players track their own spell effects (to be subject to spot audits if they are too lax)

It does seem apt...
Sorry, but the man has a point.
Of all the women I know, you are the one most likely to be 'the Dungeon Mistress'...

Maybe I just don't meet enough women...

Well, after you've met me, there's hardly any need to meet any other, is there? ;p

Re: It does seem apt...
I am forced to agree again my dear, however lets face the facts.
There just isn't enough Becka to go around.
Maybe you should look at cloning yourself to aleviate the problem? Unless of course you are trying to maintain an unfair market advantage by being the sole supplier of Becka to the world. That would make you a monopoly. And I'm sure there are laws against that kind of thing.
