A question for the metalheads

There's a girl at work who's into metal, but as a hobby (and as an attachment to her boyfriend, who is apparently in a metal band). Anyway, as I am the resident fringe-culture-consultant at my work (don't ask...), she has asked me if I know of any clubs in melbourne which play heavy metal music.

Which I don't. So I was wondering if any of you out there did, and if you could please give me names and times of said clubs.

Thanks heaps.

There are a lot more live gigs than regular clubs for metal in Melbourne. Best place to check is one of the streetpress magazines - Beat or Inpress.

Beat has a metal column at http://www.beat.com.au/columns.shtml#core - it's very general, though, and covers albums, rumours and tours.

There's also Loud magazine: http://www.geocities.com/loudster/ - an Australian metal magazine.

Club-wise, she could always try DV8 (formerly Subculture) - CBD hotel, McKillop St. It runs on Saturdays, and generally plays a bit of metal on the first level. Generally has bands on level 3 (some metal, some punk) - but she'd need to brave the goths on the second level :)

There have been metal nights at the Megabar (King Street) but I'm not sure if they are still running regularly - streetpress would be the best way to find out.

Lots of infrequent and one-off shows tend to happen, featuring half a dozen bands. I guess it depends on what type of metal she likes, and whether she wants to hear songs that she already knows ;) I'll keep an eye out for more clubs.

While not a club, there is an annual Melbourne metal concert that goes on at EVs (in Croydon) called Metalfest. Its on the 16th of April (I think. Will check tommorrow on my way to work and confirm the date) and is about 8 hours of metal. Usually death/black/etc etc. Lots of roaring and indecipherable lyrics. Good for headaches.

I'm so not going this year, I promise.
