I started watching Arjuna last night, an anime series about a girl who is as far as I can tell fighting to save the planet. I can't tell you too much about the plot at this stage because a) it's being obtuse (like we've never seen *that* before in anime) and b) I don't want to give too much away.

It has a very shoujo feel to it, without getting cutesy. I must admit that it is quite refreshing to see an anime or manga which gives the impression of being girl-oriented without demeaning girls - it's not about being a good wife, it's about a girl being strong.

I am really enjoying it, despite the preachy Captain Planet styled aspects. It has a very Miyazaki feel to it (I'm constantly reminded of Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa). Most importantly, though, it is visually stunning. While I'm not really into the character art per se, the entire effect of the animation is mind-blowing. They have blended together CGI and standard (I assume) animation really well. The music is fantastic, and makes me shiver.

Interestingly enough, there is a strong theme of kyudo in the series. My feeling is that this is because kyudo is a very popular martial art in Japan at the moment. However, the kyudo part of the series doesn't feel tacked on at all...

If you get the chance, I highly recommend watching it.

I have a cheap and nasty Hong Kong import version of the entire series, but if you're looking for better quality I believe BANDAI has begun releasing Arjuna on DVD in places like JB.

Incidentally, all this anime has left me with the vague desire to run a short 2-3 session shoujo game....

I'll play Ayame, because I don't think the importance of men's romance is stressed enough in RPGs these days.

Meanwhile, back at the anime
I'd love to see it. The last good female I saw in an anime was very androgynous because she was nine.
I can't recall the title, sadly, but she moved with her father to the countryside and then met an alien whose ai construct became her twin sister and allowed her to help defeat the escaped convict aliens.
How's the lab? Set fire to anyone recently?

*yawn* that whole "moved with her father to the countryside and then met an alien whose ai construct became her twin sister and allowed her to help defeat the escaped convict aliens" plot again. How very *done*

The lab is full of stupid. And, alas, everyone seems to have learned their lessons and are staying clear of me when I'm waving about fire.

so . .

have you yet picked up on the thinly-veiled allegory behind the whole show?

‘Arjuna’, being a figure of Hindu legend, a masterful archer and the central hero of the battle of Kurukshetra. Re-cast as a Japanese schoolgirl who takes archery classes and goes on magical adventures.

I only watched the first episode of the anime, and that was pushing two years ago, but if memory serves our heroine has a main squeeze/companion named “Chris” – being a direct reference to none other than our favourite blue charioteer Krishna. Does Chris drive a suped up sportscar? Or is it a rocketship? If memory serves, the rest of the story pretty much follows on from there.. and yer – an anime Captain Planet is about right.. there were also weird Final Fantasy (SeeD) references thrown into the mix..

Re: so . .
Yes and no.

I forget Arjuna's boyfriend's name, but he drives a motorbike (way too fast at that). Chris is a kind of mentor figure for Arjuna, who is wheelchair bound and gads about in a helicopter belonging to an organisation called SEED.

I'm only a little way into the series, though, so who knows what the future holds.

awesome. a helicopter it is then. Krishna and Arjuna were travel-buddies (for a time at least) and Krishna was very famous for giving Arjuna many, many words of advice. as well as letting him see the cockpit of his KOPTOR-CHARIOT, and wear his pilot's hat..

just watch out for that FINAL BATTLE which IS WAGED ON COSMIC GROUND, where Arjuna wimps out on his duty to fire the starter's pistol (so to speak) and Krisha talks him around so that the two factions can get their war on. This philosophical pep-talk is known as teh Bhagavad Gita. FACINATING! Thanks, Mr. Internet!
