sore belly

Hey all.

I had a fantastic weekend, but a really truly shitty monday. Saturday's training was pretty good (for Kuan's b'day I had to orgasnise a card and a present - the card was admired by all, and I bought the right sort of plum wine, so everything was happy). We would have gone to Del's party if Jye and I hadn't had the fight we did, and once we made up I fell into a coma like sleep (as I often do after training these days) on the couch and only woke up to go back to bed.

Sunday was grand. Jye went off to role-play with some boys (including Barrington), but since I am a gilr I wasn't invited or something, so I stayed home and started sewing a corset-top type thing while watching the Andromeda Strain. Grand film, first time I saw it, but a bit of a slow build up. You get to the end of it an go... well, is that it? I mean, it ends well, just somewhat abruptly in comparison to the slow pace of the rest of the film.

And then it was niki-chan's party. I had forgotten what it was like to go to a party and just hang out and chat. And it has to be a good party if people see my underwear (thanks to Polly). I think that this was only the second or third party that I've been to this year. That's not right, I should go to more. But in any case, the party was grand, I saw heaps of people I havn't seen for so very long, we lounged and chatted and it was all wonderful.

But then, after we got home, something bad happened. I woke up at about 2:30 feeling terribly ill. And I was. Awfully, awfully ill. Sick as a dog. So sick that I could not even drink some water until about 7pm. Reeeeeally sick. Did I mention the sickness? But I seem to have mostly recovered today (despite the fact that I've pulled some abdominal muscles from being so ill), which is good.

Being the microbiologist that I am, I don't think it was food poisoning, which means that I probably picked it up from someone else rather than food. And given that my symptoms were so rapid and violent, it was probably a virus. Which doesn't really help me with anything, but it is nice to know.

Anyway, I think this week is going to be a little on the soft side (one of my supervisors is getting sick, the other is very busy), with some frivolity with niki-chan and co., followed up by a movie and drinks (can you say Japanese Slipper?) with Kuan and co on the weekend (after the Naginata competition planned for saturday).

Things are looking up in the world.

In other news, Bunyip's nose seems to be fully healed. Yay! Also, here is a news story about a 28-toed cat. Freaky.

Satan in mouse form

So to start with, I'd just like to say that some fscker has 'moved' a piece of equimpent that I need (ie, absolutely require) to get any results from my little tiny mouse jaws. My supervisor is pissed off, and I am pissed off. Why does this always happen to me? Although to be fair, this didn't only happen to me this time, rather it affects four or five different researchers including me. Still, the parinoid mind within me says that it is only a matter of time before someone blames me for all of my own misfortunes. Fsckers.

So, with very little to do today, I decided to help a friend of mine orally innoculate some mice with bugs (basically the thing I did to mine). However, when I did this, I used BALB/c mice - litte white, very cute, sweet, playful and friendly mice who don't put up much of a fuss about anything. Stacey's mice, however, are Black 6 mice. Black mice with evil malice in their eyes and the souls of wolverines. They skitter, they squeal, they have inmurine strength and worst of all, they bite.

Not just your ordinary little nip, they BITE. I was wearing two layers of gloves, and I was bitten through them. Once on a knuckle, once on the little piece of skin that runs along-side the nail. Bitten, with blood. Pain pain pain, ouch ouch ouch.

They can smell when you get jittery or frightened, and it only makes them more aggressive. In my panic, I accidently flicked one that tried to bite me across the room - fortunately it was okay, just a little dazed. I am not particularly jittery around animals, but these little beasts freaked me out.

I have looked into the face of Satan, and found it to be covered in brown fur, have twitching whiskers and black beady eyes....
