Whining, job hunting and random RPG spam

I'm cutting the whining, because I know it's tedious. So I'm getting more and more fed up with the PhD the more I think about it. I mean, I can get paid more to be treated less shit. Where's the problem with that? Also, the stress is affecting me in vastly unpleasant ways - sleep is a joke, binge-eating has caused me to hit an unattractive weight, my skin is worse than when I was a be-pimpled teen, and now, to add insult to injury, I'm losing hair.

In the past few weeks my hair has been dropping out much faster than it ever has before; I spend the day picking fallen strands off things and then in the evening, when I take my hair out of its ponytail, I'm left with a sparse handful of it coming loose. My pillow has a fine golden web across it in the mornings. Washing my hair releases yet more hair to the wild. It bothers me because my hair (being so striking and different from most people) has always defined me...

I bought The Age and the Australian on Saturday, following nuwishas_tail's advice, and scoured the 'Health' sections of the job listings for anything I could qualify for. Reasearch Assistant possitions and Medical Scientist Grade 1 lisings. Between the two papers I only found about six jobs, which was more than a little disheartening, but one of them asked for someone with a background in microbiology, which is not something you see every day. Time to get my resume up to date and actually complete my CV (a daunting task in and of itself).

If anyone in the know knows somewhere looking for a biological scientist (with limited job experience, but you know, I've had 3 years experience in a PhD), let me know.

The RPG schedual has been knocked up another notch. Last Wed was my D&D game, last Sat was bishi_wannabe's Dragon Blooded game, tomorrow is mousebane's last ever 7th Sea session, the day after is another D&D night for me, and then saturday is the Dragon Blooded game once more. Yikes. bishi_wannabe recently shipped in Xenosaga II from the states, which poses and interesting problem as I am still really keen to play KOTOR II (circumstances have stopped me recently). I am expecting arguments over the TV to occur.

Also! I'd just like to say that Square is showing off something chronic with the GBA game, Kingdom Hearts - Chain of Memories. I mean, come on, Square! We all know you are putting the end of game cut scene from the PS2 Kingdom Hearts game on the Game Boy Advanced just to make every other GBA game company feel inadequate.

More job searching things that I discovered this morning:

http://www.psgazetteonline.gov.au/
--> Public sector jobs. No sciencey ones in Victoria at the moment, though.

http://www.researchjobs.net.au/
--> Search engine and email list for research positions in Australia

http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/Publishing.nsf/Content/health-career-vacant.htm
--> Department of Health. Their careers page doesn't look all that great, though.

http://jobsearch.gov.au/
--> Search for Microbiologist - there's a permanent full-time position for a Graduate Microbiologist in Thomastown. Lots of general science lab tech positions, but I guess you're looking higher than that.

Hey. Me again. Get comfortable.

Turn that anger around. Use the Dark Side. Say "fsck-you" and channel that anger into proving you can do it. Take that PhD by the neck. It's yours. You've earned that right. Finish that thesis, get that doctorate; if only so you can shove it up their arses later. One will get the tube, one will get the hardcover. Up to you which one.

One a more objective note - be careful what you wish for. In science there is a terrible set of glass ceilings that are not gender specific but education specific. A research assistant can be a pretty shitty job. Most Research Assistants are 1 or 3 year contracts - is that the life you want? And even when it isn't, where do you go from there? What is the career path for a Research Assistant? Research Officer? Typically you need a PhD to make that step. Do you want to have wasted those 3 years? Sure they'll get you ahead of typical graduates when going for jobs but what value do you place on that much of your time?

Don't get stuck in the RA trap. I don't think it's worth it - it can be thankless, shitty, and have little future. Of course there are exceptions but do not count on finding one. CSL is a very very good employer; you could go far there. Work your contacts. Don't forget to look in the newspaper under "Science", "Laboratory" and "Research".

For your hair, try getting someone to use their fingertips to give you a nice firm scalp massage (fingernails are also good if done gently). In short: stress -> elevated adrenaline -> redirects bloodflow from non-essential systems -> hair falls out due to lack of bloodflow -> scalp massage -> stimulates bloodflow -> hair gets happy again. Or at least thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

At the very least it might relax and de-stress you a little :)
