I saw Mirrormask today, and enjoyed it. bishi_wannabe didn't like it, though, which left me a little sad. Mind you, while I enjoyed the film I hardly felt it was the best film ever. Pretty, sure. And the whole modern day fairy tale thing is right up my alley. But... I don't know, I guess I felt that they could have done better in terms of story... it felt a little ham-fisted at times.

But I still liked it.

I also managed to grab copies of the "Memoirs of a Geisha" soundtrack and "The Legend of Zorro". I got the Zorro one because having seen the trailer I suspect that James Horner has done a very Pirates of the Caribbean like score. Memoirs because, well, I really want to see the film. Or at least I thought I did. The more I think about it, the more annoyed I become that none of the actresses are Japanese. Sure, when she's all dolled up Ziyi Zhang does a pretty good job of looking almost Japanese, but COME ON, PEOPLE. We're talking different enthic groups here. Are white folk not supposed to notice?

Also, the soundtrack has the ubiquitous cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma. God, can't anyone make an asian film released outside of asia without friggin Yo-Yo Ma and his cello?! He's the like Samuel L. Jackson of the orchestral world.

Or maybe I'm just cranky because it's hot.

i wish they used someone japanese too..so many good actresses coming outta asia at the mo, maybe they wanted big name actors to appeal to western audiences *sighs* if thats the case, i am not sure of the quality of this film. smells too mainstream for me...

Hollywood just seems incapable these days of marketing a product without a 'name' or a 'brand' to tie it to. Even writers are falling prey to this 'it cannot be marketed without preset audience knowledge and expectations' disease.
